The South Beach Diet is a cardiologist designed low carbohydrate weight loss program. This diet plan is high protein and limits carbohydrates.

This plan promotes that you don’t have to count calories and you can eat till satisfied.

HOW IT WORKS How does a low carbohydrate diet work? By lowering your carbohydrate intake, your body burns stored carbohydrates (glycogen) for energy.

When your body burns glycogen, water is released and you lose weight. That is why you see the claim with the south beach diet that you can lose eight to 13 pounds the first two weeks. What they don’t tell you is that you are actually losing mostly water weight.

The south beach diet plan does have some positives. The plan has you cut out processed foods, white flour, and sugar. It does help you clean up your food choices which are very important to all weight loss plans.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The low carbohydrate diets do work for a short time period. Most people will lose water weight for about 2-3 weeks and that’s it.

We have seen so many people become discouraged on this plan, here’s why:

During the first few weeks people will lose water weight. They become excited and continue on with the plan only to hit a plateau around the end of the third week.

They have followed the diet by the book and just can’t lose any more weight. About this time they are already feeling lousy. They have no energy, are weak, and become very discouraged.

The south beach book is very clever at pulling you into their plan. Just listen to a few of the books blurbs:

  • eat till satisfied
  • you’ll have dessert after dinner
  • cravings gone
  • not complicated
  • delicious
  • lose weight even if don’t exercise
  • don’t pay attention to portions, etc.
Wow, the way it sounds everyone should be on the plan. But the simple truth is that low carbohydrate diets have proven themselves not to work in the long run for most people.

Sure you will hear of someone who has lost 60 pounds but they are few and far between. And the question to ask is it really healthy in the long run.

Most people will not lose large amounts of body fat on this plan no matter how long they stay on it. A high protein diet can leave you feeling tired, irritable, constipated, and lacking in vitamins and minerals.

According to the Mayo clinic, it is impossible to say if low carbohydrate diets are safe because little is known about their long term effects on heart disease, cancer, and other health conditions.
