Eat Fish, Maybe, You Decide
Weight loss tip free...
There is no doubt eating fish can be healthy, but is there something else in your fish that’s not so healthy for you? The answer to that question is yes. That hidden, tasteless, colorless, odorless item in the majority of our fish supply is a form of mercury called methylmercury.
Some fish contain high levels of this form of mercury and can be very harmful to your nervous system. Small children and pregnant women are the most at risk.
How does mercury get into fish?
Mercury is released into the air through industrial pollution. It then falls from the air into rivers, lakes, and oceans. Bacteria in the water cause chemical changes that transform mercury into methylmercury that can be toxic.
Some fish contain more mercury than others and thus should be avoided. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the environmental protection agency are advising women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid eating:
Shark
Swordfish
King Mackerel
Tile fish
The above fish species contain very high levels of methylmercury and should be avoided.
Other fish that contain moderate levels of mercury are:
Grouper
Marlin
Orange roughy
Tuna/ canned, fresh, albacore
Local fish caught in lakes, streams, and rivers may also contain high levels of mercury or other toxins. It is recommended that you contact your local health department or fishing regulations booklet.
